handmade books
Working with methods that have
not changed considerably since the time of Gutenberg, and with
a vision for the book whose history includes William Blake, William
Morris, T.J. Cobden-Sanderson, Virginia Woolf, Harry Duncan, Walter
Hamady, and many others, Chax Press handmade books are published
in small editions that are a pleasure for the eye and the hand.
They also provide an invigorating challenge to the mind, as the
specific book forms we create, whenever possible, are invented
from the ground up to illuminate and collaborate with some of
the most exciting and challenging literary works of our time.
The physicality of the book involves the reader in the enactment
of meaning.
Chax Press handmade
books are published with the highest standards of artisanship.
Many of the editions are artistic explorations of the book form
and the possibilities for its collaboration with innovative literary
texts. We make handmade books in order to create a vision that
includes the form, structure, design, materials, and content of
the book as an integral work of readable art.
